Retain Your Rights to Make Your Work Openly Accessible

With the August 2022 announcement of a new White House policy requiring federally-funded research to be made publicly available upon publication, there is no better time for researchers to learn more about and leverage their rights as authors. In celebration of international Open Access Week, OU Libraries invites faculty, staff, and students to join us for a presentation by Kyle Courtney, an internationally recognized lawyer and librarian who is the Copyright Advisor for Harvard University. Working out of the Office for Scholarly Communication, he has been instrumental to the success of Harvard’s open access policies, establishing a Copyright First Responders program that fosters campus-wide engagement with copyright and has grown into a national network.

Kyle will speak to the legal concepts behind open access publishing as well as the benefits of open access to scholarly authors. He will also share lessons learned from his experience supporting Harvard’s open access policies and address questions related to the prospect of an open access policy at OU, reflecting the ongoing work of the Scholarly Communication Task Force.

This event is co-sponsored by the Office of the Senior Vice President and Provost, the Office of the Vice President for Research and Partnerships, and Faculty Senate.
