Using Computers for Scholarly Research

This introductory workshop is targeted towards scholars, practitioners, and researchers who are interested in using data analysis and digital humanities tools in projects for research, teaching, and service. This workshop provides more basics about how these tools work in general, allowing you to consider if new tools are right for your research process.

After this workshop, learners should be able to:

  • Explain what a computer program does
  • See commonalities in programs such as run, stop, and exit commands/buttons and menu items
  • Understand how to make experimenting with a new computer program safe for their files

This workshop is for complete beginners and does not require bringing a computer; we will go over concepts in group discussions.  The curriculum is available online.

This workshop will be offered on Zoom. This workshop is typically offered once per semester and can also be scheduled on request.  Next semester, we will offer it as the opposite format (in person). Automatic captioning will be provided via Zoom and the presenter will have the video camera on. We have no scheduled breaks during this one-hour workshop.  Video capabilities are not required of participants.  Microphone capabilities are optional; chat, screenshare, and reaction abilities are recommended. For additional accommodations on the basis of disability, please contact the workshop instructor or .
