Smoother Academic Meetings: Tips from Your Librarians

A captive audience, the modicum or illusion of some sort of operative authority, and the appearance of productivity can make academic meetings a perfect storm for inefficient and exhausting meetings. Join us to get tips from your librarians to run smoother meetings, which will encourage active participation in your meetings, while leaving more time for your scholarly pursuits.

This workshop is designed for people who are running informal meetings like research group check-ins, informal working groups, committees who are organizing conferences or workshops, or TA meetings. The material is targeted at the meeting leader but some techniques can be used by meeting participants as well to be a helpful participant.

After this workshop, learners will be able to

  • Plan for, lead, and follow up after a meeting
  • Redirect a meeting participant in guided practice with a moderator
  • Access curated resources on learning and self-reflection on meeting dynamics

Pre-requisites: none. No software or computer programs are needed other than Zoom for online versions.

This workshop will be offered online via Zoom. This workshop is typically offered once per semester and can also be scheduled on request.  Next semester, we will offer it as the opposite format (in person). Automatic captioning will be provided via Zoom. The curriculum is freely available online at: https://osf.io/2ut6c/ . We have no scheduled breaks during this one-hour workshop. Learners need to have a working microphone to participate fully in the guided practice activity, but video is not required. The workshop leaders will have video on for lip-reading. For additional accommodations on the basis of disability, please contact the workshop instructor or .
